The Charlie Watkins Foundation (CWF) has been working with the Charlie Waller Trust (CWT) to produce co-branded Transition Guides to support the mental health of students from a wide range of backgrounds who are going to university.
The guides are aimed at young people who may be particularly vulnerable to mental health problems. For example, these include care leavers, LGBTQ+ young people and young people with adverse childhood experiences.
They are all based on sound evidence and written by mental health clinicians. The guides aim to help students cope with the challenges they may face to their mental wellbeing in higher education.
The Transition Guides have been included within the Colleges Wellbeing Library – a collaboration with the Association of Colleges. The Colleges Wellbeing Library provides trusted resources for college staff, parents and students.
So far, the Transition Guides have been downloaded 838 times from the CWT website since launching in August 2021.
Some great feedback has been received from students who have downloaded them, showing they are finding value in these guides:
1. “I personally have been able to resonate well with the resource regarding students who feel they might not fit in. I think it is an excellent resource which provides really good information.”
2. “I think this is an incredibly accessible resource which provides useful and informative information to students. If anything, when I was starting, I wish I had more access to information and resources like this.”
The Transition Guides are proving a valuable addition to CWT’s resources and will help support their work going forwards. Also, they will be sent out to Student Union Welfare Officers across UK universities with the intention of supporting as many students as possible.
It is hoped these transition guides will make a real difference for all students; particularly those in vulnerable groups who may find the transition from school and home especially challenging.
To help us continue funding projects like this that equip young people to enhance their mental health and wellbeing, please consider making a donation. All contributions are greatly appreciated and enable us to help organisations support young people with mental health challenges.
